On Friday 13th March Hinchley Wood School took part in the record breaking event that was Red Nose Day 2015.
Our whole school took part in a non-uniform day with each student required to pay £1 each to wear their own clothes.
The Great Hinchley Wood Bake Off was a huge success not only raising money but awareness too.

Our School Canteen by Izak and Josh
Healthy eating is essential for the well-being of all young people and for most of us the centre of healthy eating is the school canteen. We set out to find out more about the how our canteen works and exactly how healthy it is.
In our school there are many drinks from water to even fizzy drinks! Before there is a cry of dismay, our research showed that as most of the drinks contain a majority of natural juice so on the whole they could be considered to be a relatively healthy option.
Along with drinks we checked the food. We interviewed the canteen staff and we were told that all the food was fresh and made on the day. There are three different types of food hot meals, hot food and cold food. The hot meals are on a plate and you have to queue for them. The hot food in the canteen is on metal trays to keep it warm and the cold food is a salad bar on the side. The canteen staff believe that the food they serve is healthy but that students have to make sure that they don't eat the same food over and over. Some students would like to see more variety on offer so that they are less likely to get bored with the food on offer.
How to experience the Total Solar Eclipse at HWS - by Ruby and Mo
What is a Total Solar Eclipse? On Friday 20th March 2015 there will a total solar eclipse. A solar eclipse is when the moon casts two shadows over the earth. During a solar eclipse the moon, earth and sun form a straight line. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun (seen from the earth).
How can you safely watch a Solar Eclipse? If you look at a solar eclipse without any protective eye wear you could harm your retinas which could cause long-lasting damage to your eyesight. The only way to see a solar eclipse safely is to wear protective eclipse glasses because sunglasses will not protect your eyes. Protective glasses work by filtering out the harmful ultraviolet and infrared light. If there is a complete cloud cover you will not any eclipse glasses because you won’t be able to see much.
Where can you see the Total Solar Eclipse? Only a small area of the earth can see the total eclipse. However, the rest of the earth may be able to see a partial solar eclipse.
This map shows how much of the sun is covered: The dark red shows the areas that will experience a total solar eclipse; the dark orange show where 90% of the sun is covered; the light orange the areas where up to 90% of the earth is covered and the yellow shows where up to 40% of the earth is covered. Unfortunately if you're in an area coloured white the eclipse is not visible at all. What are we doing at Hinchley Wood School? At Hinchley Wood School six hundred students will be watching the solar eclipse on the field. They will be wearing the special eclipse glasses they there eyes don’t get harmed. The rest of the students will be watching the solar eclipse live on the TV.
We asked some students if they were looking to watching the solar eclipse on the field and they all said yes. When we asked them why they were looking forward to watching the solar eclipse some of them said ‘I am looking forward to seeing the solar eclipse because I have never seen one before’. Another student said’ I am looking forward to seeing it because it sounds interesting and I want to know what a solar eclipse looks like’.

Littering - by Sam W-J and Frankie
The issue of people littering has always been a problem but the figures show that a shocking 50% of Britain litter. You can see in our video that three out of five people interviewed admitted to doing so. It’s good to see that the people of Britain are being honest but the fact that so many do is concerning.
Most people know the effects that littering has on the environment but still people choose to ignore this fact and litter anyway. I mean really it’s not really that hard to find a bin is it. I know it might be tempting after having a really bad day but some innocent duck is going to have a much worse one if you throw that plastic bag on the floor.
If you know with all your heart that you don’t litter then you can stop reading now but if you are a person who has and will keep littering then please just don’t do it. Don’t feel bad because you are most definitely not alone as the figures show.
